William Smith and his girlfriend, Bridget Thompson met as employees at a pregnancy clinic in the suburban New York village of Tarrytown. One day, when heading home from work, Mr. Smith hears the sound of a crying baby coming from a janitor's closet and finds an abandoned newborn baby boy discarded there amongst the trash. Mr. Smith, not knowing what to do, takes the baby to Bridget's apartment where Ms. Thompson calls the proper authorities. Though the detective Bridget brings the baby to finds the baby's birth-mother's family, said family disavows any claim of custody allowing William and Bridget to take joint custody of the baby and make him their own; eventually taking to naming him sweet Baby William
